The Baker’s Daughter

(after Raphael’s La Fornarina)

This is another painting in what I call the Time Travel Series. By restaging Raphael’s The Baker’s Daughter with a live model in my studio, I wanted to create the feeling of traveling back in time. But as I painted this piece, I felt historical time was also traveling toward me, flowing into my studio and filling my workspace. I like the feeling of occupying an imaginary space that is both past and present at the same time. The birds and plants surrounding the figure come from a Chinese screen in my studio.
